About the department

The Journey

Our college was established in 1964. Next year, in 1965 Physics department was established with the sanction of pre-university B.Sc. course. First two faculty were, Sri Sanjay Khan Bhaduri and Sri Binoyendra Narayan Chakroborty Chowdhury..

In 1968, with the sanction of the University of Calcutta and the Higher Education Council, Government of West Bengal, the General Undergraduate course of Physics was introduced. Professor Sudeb Chandra Das, and later Professor Arunagshu Chowdhury, along with Graduate Laboratory Instructor Lakshmi Kanta Ghosh, laboratory assistant Ajit Sarkar started to build up a Laboratory for their students, which holds a pride of place in the college till today.

In spite of the rural environs and the reality that most of our students are first generation learners, we the present teaching and non-teaching staff of the department feel happy to report that several of our recent graduates have performed creditably not only in University Exams but also in competitive exams and won gainful employment in several organizations, hence established themselves in life as a good citizen. One of our ex students is CEO and Managing Director of Idiosys Technologies, whichhas 30+ employees. We proudly state that 14 students of our Department serve as School Teachers in neighbourhood. One of A few basic factors have been responsible for the success of the Department. Four full time, one SACT and two Guest Lecturers take utmost care to complete the recommended theoretical and practical syllabus. Our Instrument Keeper Sri Gobinda Chandra Ghosh along with the laboratory assistant Sri Tapas Kumar Bhowmick and Amit Mukherjee assure proper functioning of the very well- equipped Laboratory where at least 75 different experiments are performed around the year.
Our students can also avail 10 computers with internet facility.
We have acquired 3 laptops by donation and introduced Laptop Loan Facility. Our Honours students may borrow a laptop and use it at home.
In addition to the Central Library, our Departmental Library has almost three hundred volumes of Text and Reference books which the students may borrow.

All these , along with continuous mentoring and counselling by faculty and various extra- curricular activities like educational tours, model making, students’ seminar and seminars by eminent personalities help our students to blossom to their potential for leading a happy and prosperous life.
